The importance of the Volto Santo wooden Crucifix in Lucca Cathedral during the Middle Ages is here stressed and related to the geographical site of the city, along the mediaeval roads leading from Central Europe to Rome. The concept that the city of Lucca was mainly known after 11th Centrury thanks to this venerated Art masterpiece, whose success had made the town get a special place within pilgrimage destinations is here suggested.
