This chapter is organized as follows. In Sec. II, we are concerned with thepreliminary orbit problem. We give a formal introduction to the problem anddescribe the methods by Laplace and Gauss. In Sec. III, we explain the least squaresmethod and the related differential corrections. Finally in Sec. IV, we deal with theexistence of multiple solutions: we present the classical theory by Charlier and itsgeneralization.
