Abstract

The critical thought on the definition of OGM has become more spread in correspondence with evolution of the technologies of genetic modification . In the last decade have been developed new techniques that allow targeted gene modification to be obtained more precisely and faster than by conventional plant-breeding techniques ; problems are set of regulation in so far as they seem to be in an uncertain situation concerning their classification as GMO. Although EU legislation has been dramatically revised from 1990 to the present , the GMO definition have remained largely unchanged, and based upon the techniques and knowledge of genome available at the time of first implementation. Some applications of biotec companies to the competent authorities of European member States and the need to relaunch the research in agriculture, on one side have conducted to reflect on that definition, from the other side have lifted ageneral relief, more times emerged in the past, referring to the European choice of process-based rather then products-based regulation
