Greek and Latin literary sources provide a wealth of scattered anecdotes about the life and accomplishments of many notable painters and sculptors. Inscribed texts on monuments and individual works of art add further evidence for the organization of workshops in Greek and Roman times. But how useful are these sources for the purpose of reconstructing the social and cultural role of the artist on a collective scale, throughout the era that we refer to as ‘Greco-Roman antiquity’? This question is here answered by focusing on two specific historical and cultural contexts: on the one hand, the Greek cities of the Classical period in the 5th and 4th centuries BCE; on the other hand, the Roman Empire around the 1st and 2nd centuries CE. Within these historical frameworks, the article addresses key aspects of artistic identity: the economic position of artists, their social role within the community, their cultural capital and influence. Conceived as a sequence of highlighted problems, the article provides fundamental background for detailed approaches to questions about the relationship between rhetoric and the visual arts.
