University teachers played an important role during the Italian Risorgimento. The University of Pisa, in particular, hosted various teachers directly involved in the demonstrations and at the head of the University voluntary battalion of 1848. Such “anti-systemic” politicisation of the professors ended with the unification of Italy (1861). They become members of Parliament or ministers, also because the academic institution should become one of the sources for the legitimation of the new order. In Pisa, the new politicisation could be observed also on the local scale: the teachers constantly joined the «Consiglio comunale» and many of them became «assessori». For a university town as Pisa, the link between academic hierarchies, academic policies and the politics of the local community was crucial.
