This article aims at understanding the great public acclaim for films set in a cinematic interpretation of the classical past, despite the low consideration critics had for this movies. The author investigates the origins of these films and traces back their genesis in historical fiction in literature and in academic painting with classical subjects. Finally, the author discusses how decisive has been – and still is – the use of myths for the construction of a successful story set in the past.
