This paper examines the practice of the 'chreia' from the twofold perspective of its philosophical content and its place in the school curriculum. Evidence from Theon on one side, and later textbooks and the papyri on the other, shows that the so-called Progymnasmata originally belonged to the educational practice in Isocrates' school.
