The road network of historic city centers and in particular, the theme of the historic pavement represents the historical image of the place, no less than the colors of the facades of the buildings that overlook the streets. Road conditions were very bad, at least until the first half of the eighteenth century, the pavements were covered with mud and stagnant water that spread "fetid miasma". Besides the same action of walking involved, at least until the first half of the eighteenth century, considerable difficulties. The streets of the historic center of Volterra are still paved with stone called “Panchina”. The road network of Volterra consisting of narrow and sloping streets and closed and irregular squares promotes pedestrian mobility and develops an integrated system of relations between public and private spaces, between interior and exterior spaces. Despite the transport revolution, the invention of new materials and the use of new technologies Volterra continues to preserve “the very useful way of paving the roads”.
La viabilità urbana dei centri storici e in particolare, il tema della pavimentazione storica esprime l’immagine del luogo, non meno delle colorazioni delle facciate dei palazzi che vi si affacciano. Almeno fino agli inizi dell’Ottocento e oltre le condizioni delle strade nei centri urbani erano pessime, i lastrici erano coperti di fango e acque stagnanti dalle quali si diffondevano “miasmi fetidi”. Dunque la stessa azione del camminare comportava, fino almeno alla prima metà del Settecento e oltre, delle notevoli difficoltà. Le strade di un borgo storico toscano come quello di Volterra sono ancora oggi per lo più pavimentate con la pietra detta panchina. La viabilità di Volterra fatta di strade strette, tortuose e in pendenza e di piazze chiuse dalla forma irregolare, privilegia la mobilità pedonale e favorisce un sistema integrato di relazioni tra spazi pubblici e privati, tra spazi interni ed esterni. Nonostante la rivoluzione dei trasporti, l’utilizzo di nuovi materiali e l’uso di nuove tecnologie Volterra cerca di preservare “l’utilissimo modo di lastricare le strade”.
