In this essay I describe the various evolutions of the ancient and medieval ethnonym at the origin of the modern denomination "British", which were determined by a complex series of transmigrations of identities, and, in certain cases, by actual transmigrations of peoples. In such evolutions, moreover, there may be detected elements which are useful to understand the genesis of the term "British" itself, in order to provide a linguistic (and historical) vantage point to the investigations of Anglicists, modernists, sociologists and so forth.

Abstract

In this essay I describe the various evolutions of the ancient and medieval ethnonym at the origin of the modern denomination "British", which were determined by a complex series of transmigrations of identities, and, in certain cases, by actual transmigrations of peoples. In such evolutions, moreover, there may be detected elements which are useful to understand the genesis of the term "British" itself, in order to provide a linguistic (and historical) vantage point to the investigations of Anglicists, modernists, sociologists and so forth.
