Friedrich Rückert's fame today is mostly based on the many musical transpositions of his poems, including those by Fanny Mendelssohn-Hensel, sister of Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, who could not make a career out of her music as a woman of a wealthy, Jewish family. Questions of the social acceptance of art arose also for Rückert by not fulfilling the public and critics expectations concerning genres and style. He translated texts of distant oriental cultures, attempting to permeate their Geist, and even to enrich the German language through foreign structures which appeared to be particularly apt as means of poetic expressions, such as some types of Sanskrit compounds.
