Transferring the capital from Turin to Florence meant that extensive urban renovation was necessary for the city to adjust to its new role. This article analyses investments, business and speculative activities triggered by the demolition and construction works foreseen in the Poggi plan. It highlights the presence of local, Italian and foreign – mainly british - entrepreneurs and their close relations with the political world of the time, both at local administrative and national government levels.
