The paper discusses Pāṇini's use of sounds as markers (it, anubandha), considering arguments by Kātyāyaṇa, Patañjali and others concerning whether or not such markers are to be treated as integral part the items prior to their being stripped of from these items by the sūtra which provides for the unconditioned deletion of sounds given the class name "it". Through these discussions the paper intends to show the similarity between substitution and name giving procedures and the role of markers as elements able to "morphologies" the sound strings they are attached to
