This study analyses the distribution of a monogenean parasite, the Pseudodactylogyrus anguillae, in the gills of European glass eels (Anguilla anguilla). The distribution of the parasite is not casual; both in the postlarval and adult stages, the parasite appears to have a predilection for certain sites. In the case of infestation by P. anguillae on its own, the parasite has shown to also occupy those sites which are preferred by the P. bini in congeneric infestation.

Abstract

This study analyses the distribution of a monogenean parasite, the Pseudodactylogyrus anguillae, in the gills of European glass eels (Anguilla anguilla). The distribution of the parasite is not casual; both in the postlarval and adult stages, the parasite appears to have a predilection for certain sites. In the case of infestation by P. anguillae on its own, the parasite has shown to also occupy those sites which are preferred by the P. bini in congeneric infestation.
