Abstract

This article discusses the relationship between Ovid and the Hellenistic visual culture via the episode of Ermaphroditus and Salmacis from the Metamorphoses. Ovid, in drawing on a diverse and partially inconsistent literary tradition, may have derived a number of elements concerning content, context and certain narrative tools from visual sources. In particular, his interest in the issues of time, gaze and erotic struggle find close visual parallels in Hellenistic examples.
