In early manuscripts, paratexts always shape up the understanding and interpretation of the literary text: in lyric anthologies and other miscellaneous codices, such informative value is even more important, and holds a particular significance in the context of the readership to whom the manuscript was addressed: the selection criteria of included works, their canon and sequence, the presence of glosses or marginalia were factors that greatly influenced the reading of each author and text. In such reception context, the codex’s „thresholds” (incipit, explicit, colophon) may shed light on the scribe’s cultural aims, his intention and purposes: most examples will be drawn from 15th-century Tuscany.
