Proximal tibia reconstruction with cementless modular prosthesis after resections for bone tumors [Reconstrucao da tibia proximal com protese modular nao cimentada apos resseccao de tumores osseos]

The authors analyzed 68 patients at Istituto Ortopedico Rizzoli between 1985 and 1993 with primary bone tumors of proximal tibia submitted to resection and reconstruction with cementless modular prosthesis. With a medium follow-up of 52 months, the functional results were excellent and good in 75% of cases according to Eneking's classification, employed by the Musculoskeletal Tumor Society. The mechanical complications were more common (30%), however, the resolution did not change the functional status. Of those who developed infection (11 cases), only 50% had good results. Based on the excellent functional results obtained, the authors conclude that cementless modular prosthesis is a reasonable reconstructive option after resection of proximal tibial tumors. The extensor mechanism reconstruction and the prosthetic muscular covering are essential factors to obtain those results.
