Scholars have noticed a reprise of the pseudo-platonic Eryxias in a passage of the second part of Philo’s De plantation. In this section, which focuses on the drunkenness of Noah, Philo observes that wealth – exactly as wine – only stresses the natural qualities already present in the individual: in particular, wealth is a cause of good things for the good man and of bad things for the bad (Philo, Plant. 171). The latter phrase has been connected with a ‘relativist’ principle formulated by the sophist Prodicus in the Eryxias, affirming that the quality of each thing depends on usage (397e3-12). It is not necessary to imagine a precise memory of this dialogue, as the argument found in Philo is understandable in the background of the stoic tradition, with particular reference to the doctrine of the indifferents.
