The study of intra-party power is a masterpiece of political science. Party organizational dynamics have been analysed through different analytical lenses. In this article we focus on two different visions of party change. A first interpretation addresses the eventual relationship between party change and the denationsalisation of politics; a second interpretation is centred on the changed relationship between parties, the State and civil society. The aim of this study is do analyse to what extent and in which direction the Italian political parties have undergone organizational changes, from 1991 to 2012. More specifically, the article seeks to verify whether the changes experienced by the Italian parties have been more in line with the hypothesis of organizational denationalisation
