This paper arises from the Italian debate on “ideologia del gender”, a travesty of the LGBTQI position constructed by Catholic fundamentalist propaganda for antifeminist, homophobic and transphobic purposes. Its aim is to demonstrate the fundamental continuity between the struggle for the rights of LGBTQI persons and the broader conception of individual rights which, from the Enlightenment onwards, has been the hallmark of Western legal and political discourses
