This paper focuses on the political, juridical and social impact of education, looking at the English case as a relevant example. A process will be emphasized, gradually removing education from the philantropic and charitable sphere, and giving it new "meanings", such as that of "social duty" and, then, that of a "legal right". During this process, Wollstonecraft's and Mill's approaches are considered as fundamental, with reference also to the gender perspective, in understanding educational development as a necessary element for the human flourishing.
