Abstract

Tuscany, in the district of Massa-Carrara. The town is situated at the confluence of Magra river and Verde stream, on a very important medieval road: the Via Francigena or Romea, that connected Rome and the Mediterranean Sea with France and northern Spain. Archaeological excavations, in the context of a new bridge construction over the Magra river, found five graves and some structures, most probably the remains of the medieval Saint John’s hospital, known since the end of XIII century. The finds, among which two french gold coins from inhumations (Charles V and Charles VI, kings of France respectively 1364-1380 and 1380-1422), suggest richness of contacts with northern Italy (Emilia Romagna), Tuscany, Liguria and maybe French Kingdom.
