The paper has two aims, regarding, respectively, style and method. STYLE: the paper reports on a study of the presence of ‘formal’ and ‘informal’ lexis in newspaper headlines. This forms part of a wider study in which over 2,300 headlines from eight British national dailies are being investigated from a number of perspectives. METHOD: the paper evaluates the usefulness of lexicographical descriptions of English when judging whether items of vocabulary (or particular senses/uses thereof) may be considered as significantly formal or informal.
