In 2004, Iversen and Rundmo developed a valid and reliable scale for measuring individual road safety attitudes in English: the Attitude Toward Traffic Safety Scale ASDS, which covers three dimensions: Settings to comply with traffic regulations, attitudes to responsibility towards other passengers and attitudes to driving under the influence of alcohol. This scale was translated into German and validated on the basis of an online survey of students in Germany (N = 252). Construct validity, discriminative, convergent and discriminant validity as well as criterion validity were examined and assessed. The original scale for the German version has been shortened by two items to a total of 14 items. The German version of the scale has very good measuring characteristics which reflect the factor structure well. A short, high-quality instrument is now available for use in German-language survey instruments of psychological traffic research.
