The article presents a detailed analysis of The Boy in the Last Row, by Juan Mayorga, based on its most recent printed version (2014; first Spanish edition: 2006). The study highlights the metaleptic construction of the play, as well as the thematic importance of the creative and deceptive power of fiction. The work, brought to the stage in numerous countries and adapted to the cinema by Francoise Ozon (In the House, 2012), is interpreted in the present study as a mise en abyme of the process of literary communication, which entails the potential of writing to broaden the horizons of the receiver, as well as the risks that this implies for those who do not distinguish the plane of fiction from reality. Moreover, this article discusses other motifs present in The Boy in the Last Row and sheds light on the dynamics established in the relationships of the main characters. It also considers this play's relation to other works written by Mayorga. (EDP). © 2018 Society of Spanish and Spanish-American Studies. All rights reserved.
