The title of this voluminous monograph is somewhat misleading or at least badly chosen: only two fragments of artes grammaticae (one, PL III/504, really of minuscule size and significance) are included among the 22-odd fragmentary documents which are treated in the various chapters of this book. The rest are either school exercises or bilingual glossaries without any accompanying theoretical text. The topic therefore is only vaguely that highlighted in the title, and the majority of the texts are best described as language learning tools and school texts and exercises. S. herself appears at times aware of the problem; for example, regarding P. Bodl. I 2 (p. 169), she muses on the inappropriateness of describing the word-list as a ‘grammatical treatise'. Some of these documents were edited for the first time or re-edited recently, some in Kramer, Glossaria bilinguia and Glossaria bilinguia altera (1983 and 2001), or in the Oxyrhynchus Papyri LXXVIII (2012), and other papyrological high-profile journals, with very full and generally satisfactory annotation, so the task Scappaticcio (henceforward S.) set herself to was a challenging one.
