Twenty years of experimental ecology along the coast of Calafuria (Leghorn). The first experimental stud-ies in the Mediterranean Sea were made along the coast of Calafuria at the end of the ’80s. Starting with simple removal experiments of dominant species in the intertidal zone, marine experimental ecology developed through complex investiga-tions, also extending to subtidal habitats. The increasing knowledge of the mechanisms of biotic interactions and the influence of abiotic factors on organisms, subsequently gave the opportunity to test hypotheses on effects of predicted climate changes, loss of biodiversity and invasion by alien species on marine ecosystem functioning.

Abstract
Twenty years of experimental ecology along the coast of Calafuria (Leghorn). The first experimental stud-ies in the Mediterranean Sea were made along the coast of Calafuria at the end of the ’80s. Starting with simple removal experiments of dominant species in the intertidal zone, marine experimental ecology developed through complex investiga-tions, also extending to subtidal habitats. The increasing knowledge of the mechanisms of biotic interactions and the influence of abiotic factors on organisms, subsequently gave the opportunity to test hypotheses on effects of predicted climate changes, loss of biodiversity and invasion by alien species on marine ecosystem functioning.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
