The essay focuses on the 13th century sculpture compounds of the presbiteries of the churches of Santa Maria Assunta at Diecimo and San Cristofano at Barga, in the medieval diocesis of Lucca. The authors offers a new interpretation of the reliefs of Barga pulpit, and of the lions still visible in Diecimo, both from a stylistic and iconographic point of view,, thanks also to sources for local ecclesiastic history so far never related to art history.
