Abstract

Species-rich herbaceous communities (meadows, pastures, garigue) constitute models, that can be successfully duplicated in cities, to mitigate the adverse effects of human activities and enhance the biotic component. The idea is to revegetate urban degraded soil with aesthetically pleasing wildflower meadows creating a habitat and conserving the local flora, with low man-agement cost. In the last three decades, seed mixtures containing a high percentage of flowering plants have been successfully used in many urban sites throughout Europe. We review some studies carried out at the CNR ISE Pisa and UNIPI aimed at assessing the application of habitat templates in green infrastructures.
