People knew how to make pottery as early as the Neolithic era, and regarding Roman times there is well documented evidence of a detailed knowledge of the different types of raw clay and of the methods practiced to make the ceramic dough as suitable as possible for the pottery’s intended uses. The different processes of shaping, finishing and firing clay presented here document that the production in the Roman times was based on a sophisticated technical “know-how” and a solidly organized work-flow at every step of the manufacturing chain.
