The authors compared the results and tested the effectiveness of two methods of trans-vaginal echographic pregnancy diagnosis in 50 cows. The techniques (based on a 5 MHz convex transducer) provided an easy, safe, reliable and clean method to scan inner genital apparatus, either by simple vaginal or by recto-vaginal (or bimanual) approach. On field, the faster and more reliable findings by simple trans-vaginal method occurred between the 30th and 35th days of pregnancy. Rectal repletion and cranio-ventral uterine displacement out of the pelvic rim sometimes raised diagnostic difficulties or doubts. Therefore, negative diagnoses at simple trans-vaginal approach, often required the more reliable bimanual confirmation. For correct reproductive farm management, owing to physiologic embryonic losses, earlier diagnoses should be confirmed later.
