The paper deals with the Barocco style in Montale's La bufera e altro, focusing on John Donne's influence. After tracing a theoretical framework, centered on the relationship between Montale and Eliot's interpretation of Dante and of English metaphysical poets, the Author shows Donne's presence through several close readings of Montale's poems. The recall of Donne's verses is useful to understand the structure of Montale's book, characterized by a tension between an allegorical structure and a tendency to romance. What follows is the first part of the paper, the second part of which will be published on the next issue of «Annali della Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa».
