Leonard Barkan's "Michelangelo. A life on paper" examines those mechanisms of Michelangelo's creativity which act between the visual universe and the verbal one. Barkan's insights are critically dis-cussed in comparison with the logic of the poet's modus scribendi. An interpretation is proposed of the expression pittura morta in the famous sonnet "I’ ho già fatto un gozzo in questo stento" and hypotheses are advanced about the Canzoniere.
