The paper is focused on Montale's unpublished translation of Shakespeare's Julius Caesar and examines it in the light of Montale's coeval poetic and journalistic activity. The author's statements and indirect testimony are read through together with the editorial succession of Montale's previous translations of Shakespeare's work. In its second part, the paper deals with an analysis of the text, describes its stylistic features and highlights its various formal connections both with lyric poetry and other Montale's experiences of translation from English language.
