In this introoduction, the author describes the evolving framework around the international protection of refugees, in the light of the UN-sponsored Global Compact and of the current debate on the reform of the Common European Asylum System. Afterwards, he introduces a Forum (presented in this Issue of Diritti umani e diritto internazionale) aimed at offering a critical appraisal of solutions recently adopted or proposed in the field of international protection and migration governance by the EU or its Member States. To this end, the main critical questions raised by such solutions are addressed, with the primary yardstick being the full implementation of international refugee law, of human rights law and of the EU principles as enshrined in the EU treaties, including the EU Charter of fundamental rights.
