Mantenere il segreto: mercatura e politica per i lucchesi a Bruges nel tardo medioevo

The community of businessmen of Lucca in Bruges is configured not only as a civil corporation but also as a sort of religious brotherhood with its obligations and its rituals to be respected: the public oath of observance of the statute, participation in mass every first Sunday of the month in the chapel dedicated to the Holy Face (Volto Santo) in the church of the Augustinians, the obligatory presence at the Feast of the Holy Cross every September 14 wearing "the livery" with "chapuccio e cotta", the duty to assist the consul when requested, privileged recourse to internal jurisdiction rather than local authorities; civil-religious brotherhood for which the confidentiality or secrecy on the internal affairs of the nation was a further functional element to the compactness, to its own protection and safeguarding in the society in which it operated, far from the motherland.
