This article discusses the phenomenon of ‘comparable phrasemes’ in English and Italian, that is pairs of expressions which are of similar form and meaning in the two languages (e.g. cold war ↔ guerra fredda). The article has three main aims: (i) to attempt to quantify the phenomenon as regards modern English and Italian; (ii) to relate the phenomenon to research on phraseological calquing; and (iii) to indicate relevant studies carried out in the field of second language pedagogy.
