Abstract
The debate concerning the employment of advanced technologies in agriculture situates in the context of the broader discussion about sustainable food production . The combination of climate change issues and the fact that the world population is growing are challenging the agri-food sector. The challenge regards the need to meet society’s food demands while preserving the environment and natural resources . Technological innovative solutions can contribute for a more sustainable agri-food sector meeting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) launched by the United Nations in 2015. Crops that are more tolerant to rapidly adapt in harsher environments, such as the recent period of extreme drought in parts of Europe, will be crucial for the success of tomorrow’s food production approaches. New breeding techniques can contribute to tailoring crops to a specific area, considering the environmental factors of a certain region. NBT is also used to generate crops with improved nutritional composition, improved digestibility, lower content of anti-nutritional components, reduced allergenicity or requiring less input, which has a direct benefit for our environment.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
