Environmental performance of Italian clay roof tiles - According to most recent updating of European voluntary standard EN15804 and EU PEF project advices, two companies ANDIL associated producers of roofing elements, partners of the European LIFE project HEROTILE “High Energy savings in building cooling by ROof TILEs shape optimization”, have recently completed the life cycle assessment of Portuguese and Marseillaise clay roof tiles and published two EPDs under the EPDItaly national scheme. The two EPDs, cradle to gate+option type, are the first available on the Italian market and describe the life cycle of the tiles during production, use, end of life, including benefits and loads beyond the system boundary, according to the modular approach as defined in EN15804. This paper offers a easy-to-read commentary of the EPD document as well recommendation about how to use EPD data and additional information as input for measuring the level of sustainability of buildings. The Environmental Product Declaration drafted for the HEROTILE roof tile demonstrates that the desired objectives of the LIFE project have been fully achieved, and constitutes a new ID card for sustainable fired tiles, in line with the most recent European energy saving and sustainability strategies and the latest national indications on minimum environmental criteria.
