Niculoso Pisano maestro di azulejos a Siviglia (fine XV-inizio XVI sec.)

Niculoso Pisano, an Italian and originally from Pisa or his county (contado), arrived in Seville at the end of the Fifteenth Century: he lived and worked in Triana, in the ancient district of the ceramists along the banks of the Quadalquivir river. Here he introduced an innovative technique for paintings with figurative and landscape paintings of ceramic tiles (azulejos pintados). His work is the highest expression of ceramics forged in the widest and most refined European culture, the result of the circularity of men, ideas and techniques of the European system in the years between the end of the middle Ages and the early modern Age.

Niculoso Pisano, italiano e originario di Pisa o del suo contado, giunse a Siviglia alla fine del Quattrocento: visse e lavorò a Triana, nell’antico quartiere dei ceramisti lungo le rive del fiume Quadalquivir. Qui introdusse una tecnica innovativa per dipingere quadri con pitture figurative e paesaggistiche di mattonelle di ceramica (azulejos pintados). La sua opera costituisce l’espressione più alta dell’arte ceramica forgiata nella più ampia e raffinata cultura europea, frutto della circolarità di uomini, idee e di tecniche del sistema Europa negli anni tra la fine del medioevo e la prima età moderna.
