In April 1787 a "puff" in the Gazzetta di Parma announced that the Livorno based company of Giacinto Micali and son had recently negotiated in London with the foremost printsellers of the day the rights for the exclusive sale and distribution of their prints in Italy. They were thus catering for the growing European taste for British prints and works of the flourishing British school of painting. The announcement was followed by the publication in 1789 and 1793 of sale catalogues of the full range of works produced by John Boydell. The essay analyzes the stock of Boydell prints available in Livorno, highlighting the uniqueness of Micali's position on the Italian market for English mezzotint engravings.
