This chapter investigates traces of linguistic innovation and emotional language in teen talk in TV dialogue, with a view to employing popular TV series as a source and model of linguistic and social behavior in the English as a Foreign Language classroom. After decades of discussion on the difference between spontaneous conversation and media dialogue, several studies have shown how media play a pivotal role in shaping sociolinguistic change and impact on a vast array of practices, in particular influencing the way people talk. Presenting language learners with such a model represents a strategic didactic move for several reasons: TV shows are an integral part of students’ lives and thus can increase motivation and provide students with mirror images of themselves and possible models of interactive behavior to understand, take notice of, and reuse, as is the case in data-driven learning.
