The United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Peasants and People who Work in Rural Areas must be read by attributing great importance to the cultural aspect of sustainability. The rights that the Declaration recognizes are in fact individual and collective at the same time and are part of the category of biocultural rights. The fulfillment of these biocultural rights, as well as the notion of food sovereignty, cannot be reduced to a mere recognition of the economic needs of a generation present on a territory. It requires the identification of correct indicators of sustainable development and different sustainable agri-food models based on recognition of Rights for Ecosystem Services rather than on Payments for Ecosystem Services (payment of money to subjects who are committed to protecting an ecosystem) .

Abstract
The United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Peasants and People who Work in Rural Areas must be read by attributing great importance to the cultural aspect of sustainability. The rights that the Declaration recognizes are in fact individual and collective at the same time and are part of the category of biocultural rights. The fulfillment of these biocultural rights, as well as the notion of food sovereignty, cannot be reduced to a mere recognition of the economic needs of a generation present on a territory. It requires the identification of correct indicators of sustainable development and different sustainable agri-food models based on recognition of Rights for Ecosystem Services rather than on Payments for Ecosystem Services (payment of money to subjects who are committed to protecting an ecosystem) .File | Dimensione | Formato | |
