After discussing the beginning of the Paradiso and surveying its Neoplatonic background, I will focus on Beatrice’s argument, where Dante’s philosophical assumptions about language, its limitations and its power are outlined. Finally, the connection between vv. 1– 12 of the fi rst canto of the Paradiso and Beatrice’s philosophical excursus in the fourth will be presented against the background of Plotinus’s theory of Platonic myths.
