This paper aims to clarify a passage of Plato’s Laws (II, 667a-671a) which concerns the definition of three criteria of beautifulness of the artistic work. My main thesis is that the third criterion does not concern neither exclusively technical, nor only ethical aspects, as many interpreters maintained; rather, these two aspects are strictly intertwined. The skill of the musician in employing correct harmonies and rhytms, which are suitable to the represented characters, results in technical aspects, but implies knowledge of the ethical model to be imitated.

Abstract
This paper aims to clarify a passage of Plato’s Laws (II, 667a-671a) which concerns the definition of three criteria of beautifulness of the artistic work. My main thesis is that the third criterion does not concern neither exclusively technical, nor only ethical aspects, as many interpreters maintained; rather, these two aspects are strictly intertwined. The skill of the musician in employing correct harmonies and rhytms, which are suitable to the represented characters, results in technical aspects, but implies knowledge of the ethical model to be imitated.File in questo prodotto:
