Tribology deals with every problem related to friction, wear and lubrication. Tribological studies range from theoretical to applied ones. Tribology subjects were included in the Congresses of the Italian Association of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (AIMETA) since the first edition in 1971. The Tribology Group of AIMETA (GAIT) was founded in 1988. GAIT played an important role for the Tribology Commission of the Italian National Organization of Standardization. It organized five national Tribology Conferences from 1991 to 1998 and five International Tribology Conferences from 2000 to 2006. After the foundation of the Italian Tribology Association (AIT) in 2005, GAIT collaborated with AIT for the organization of the biennial European Conferences on Tribology (ECOTRIB) held every odd year and for the biennial Workshops "Tribologia e industria" held every even year. Virtual seminars have been also organized by GAIT since 2021. The strong activity of GAIT and AIT has taken to the awarding of the Tribology Gold Medal for the first time to an Italian scientist in 2006 and to the assignation of the World Tribology Congress 2013 to Italy.
