The correct evaluation of stiffness and damping coefficients of tilting pad journal bearings is fundamental for correct design and operation of turbomachinery. The dynamic characteristics of the bearing depends on both the lubricant film thickness and the pad-pivot system. In this work the behavior of the pad-pivot system of ball and socket bearings has been investigated both numerically and experimentally with particular attention to the pivot stiffness. Under certain loading conditions the pad-pivot system seems to have a stiffness comparable to the one of the lubricant film for the tested bearing.

Abstract
The correct evaluation of stiffness and damping coefficients of tilting pad journal bearings is fundamental for correct design and operation of turbomachinery. The dynamic characteristics of the bearing depends on both the lubricant film thickness and the pad-pivot system. In this work the behavior of the pad-pivot system of ball and socket bearings has been investigated both numerically and experimentally with particular attention to the pivot stiffness. Under certain loading conditions the pad-pivot system seems to have a stiffness comparable to the one of the lubricant film for the tested bearing.File in questo prodotto:
