This long introductory essay to the 2022 Culture Issue of “Textus: English Studies in Italy” has been written by the volume’s four guest editors and is divided into five titled sections. Although the editors have conceived this essay together, Laura Giovannelli is responsible for “1. Background and contents” (pp. 7-15) and “3. Oscar Wilde and prison experience” (pp. 21-27); Stefano Evangelista for “2. Oscar Wilde and his world”; Pierpaolo Martino for “4. Iconicity, performance and celebrity in Oscar Wilde”; and Gino Scatasta for “5. Oscar Wilde and journalism”. After providing an overview of the most significant recent trends in the ever-growing, transdisciplinary field of Wilde Studies, the essay offers more specific insights into Wilde’s national identity and cosmopolitan connections; his incarceration and subsequent civic commitment regarding inhuman prison conditions and British laws; his iconic status in contemporary pop culture and as the first pop star in British history; his multifaceted journalistic production.
Background and contents” (pp. 7-15) e “3. Oscar Wilde and prison experience” (pp. 21-27); Stefano Evangelista di “2. Oscar Wilde and his world”; Pierpaolo Martino di “4. Iconicity, performance and celebrity in Oscar Wilde”; Gino Scatasta di “5. Oscar Wilde and journalism”.
