The complexity of the issues relating to the coexistence of genetically engineered, conventional and organic crops continues to feed a wider debate about, on the one hand, the regulation of genetic engineering in agricultural production activities, and, at the scientific level, on sound science, which is intertwined with the problematic relationship between risk assessment and risk management, in terms of implementation methods and criteria used. By looking at the eU and US regulatory frameworks designed on the matter, this contribution will show, finally, how neither “containment of risks” nor “coexistence of crops” can legally maintain pre-defined geometries against cross-contamination, especially in a world where nature, technoscience, law and society inevitably merge with each other, in the face of scientific uncertainty, risks of transnational nature, and the crisis of scientific integrity.
