The Charles V Castle was conceived as the defensive siege of Capua. The castle structure, very interesting for the sixteenth century military history of architecture and the subsequent ramparts organization, fortunately have been preserved in their most significant features. The use of the entire building as a Pyrotechnic Factory, although requiring the necessity to build new sheds and volumes in areas adjacent to the wall within the military demarcation, has determined the conservation of the original landscape values of the whole wide area near Volturno river and the preservation of the Castle material integrity, that has not been irreparably modified by improper restoration works. Therefore, although still today the whole architectural military complex requires urgent restoration works, the partial ‘isolation’ in which it has lived over the last two hundred years, allows to imagine strategic choices to preserve the peculiarities of the sixteenth-century project, its relationship with the context and, in particular, with the bastioned wall, by respecting the material authenticity that still characterizes a large part of existing structures and external areas. This contribution aims at offering many reflections on landscape, historical-architectural, historical-urban and historical-military values that still characterize Capua Castle and its boundary walls; they will be useful for a planning of a desirable conservation, restoration and enhancement program for a public use, in an integrated vision of Capua urban reality.

Abstract
This contribution aims at offering many reflections on landscape, historical-architectural, historical-urban and historical-military values that still characterize Capua Castle and its boundary walls; they will be useful for a planning of a desirable conservation, restoration and enhancement program for a public use, in an integrated vision of Capua urban reality.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
