RFID sensing technology is reviewed showing the available design configurations and their applications. The initial part of the paper describes the fundamentals of RFID technology. Afterwards, the motivation for using RFID sensors in place of standard sensor equipped wi-fi nodes is described. Notably, the absence of battery and the lower cost with respect to other market available sensors are the main strengths of RFID sensing technology. RFID sensors are classified by separating them in chipped and chipless configurations. Both categories are then separated on the basis of their working mechanism (electronic, electromagnetic and acoustic). RFID sensors equipped with a chip are more established on the market and possess relevant possibilities in applicative scenarios. Conversely, a chipless RFID sensor represents a drastically new concept, which could be a breakthrough for the market but is, currently, in its infancy. The possible tag configurations have then shown highlighting advantages and limitations. An overview of the most promising applicative scenarios for RFID sensors is also presented.

Abstract
An overview of the most promising applicative scenarios for RFID sensors is also presented.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
